Redmine expertise

Redmine is a collaborative, open source platform that solves many issues, especially for managing the daily work of teams. Redmine works as a web application, and has many other ticketing and time/tasks tracking features.

In companies, different (internal or external) projects can quickly become complex to supervise. In addition, they seek many human resources. It then became important for project managers, and all stakeholders involved, to be able to clearly define priorities, keeping their productivity goals in view.

Online project management software has been developed recently to solve various business issues. Nowadays, they’re essential to facilitate the organization and management of corporate activities, and can help with planning, relationships with customers and prospects, and  for the management of tasks and different jobs.

What is Redmine ?

Redmine is a collaborative, open source management platform developed in Ruby, under the Ruby On Rails framework. It helps to solve many problems in the management of work and daily tasks.

Redmine is recognized in the world of computer development, but the tool is available for all types of organizations, thanks to its modularity and flexibility. It is regularly updated, has a large community, and is available in more than thirty languages.

Ruby On Rails, also called RoR or Rails, is a web-free framework written in Ruby (object-oriented programming language). It offers a structure that allows you to quickly and intuitively develop web applications.

Some features

Redmine proposes all the features needed to work “in project-mode”. It allows to drive one, or even several, simultaneous projects (multi-project management). In addition, the ability to manage the roles, profiles and users’ rights gives it great power in terms of data confidentiality. This great plurality of roles allows, without any problem, to share the project with the internal teams, and the customers concerned.

Redmine is a responsive, effective and comprehensive tool. It can be very easy to use, and will be essential for any project manager wishing to follow his team’s workflows. A Gantt Diagram can be used to track projects’ progress, the positioning of tasks, in the form of a unified console.

For its technical part, Redmine requires to be hosted on servers and to be regularly maintained and backed-up.

A Gantt Diagram is used to visually represent the progress of the various actions constituting a project. The main elements are represented by the tasks positioned horizontally on a chronology with various units of time (days, weeks, months …).

This one then makes it possible to visualize :

  • The different tasks to consider;
  • The start date and the end date of each task ;
  • Each task duration ;
  • Possible task overlap and its duration ;
  • The start and end dates of the project as a whole … .

Redmine is the perfect tool for resource management, scheduling and task allocation, but also to manage customer’s requests, maintenance, or bugs.

Here is an overview of other major features :

  • Tracking blocking, urgent, problematic tasks ;
  • Positioning tasks in a calendar ;
  • Specific news wall for each user ;
  • Detailed notifications, by e-mail ;
  • Wiki and forum by project ;
  • Tracking time spent by task, project … ;
  • Custom fields and descriptions for tickets ;
  • Task creation by email ;
  • Support for LDAP authentication ;
  • Possibility of user self-registration ;
  • Customization with themes and plug-ins ;
  • Tagging descriptions in Textile language ;
  • Management of many document formats (PDF …) … ;

Here’s a “Textile” overview.

A user-friendly interface

Redmine has a powerful search engine to locate tickets, documents or Wikis.

Redmine works through a ticket system, a list of tasks. These can be attributed to different collaborators, allowing to divide the workload as well as possible. The Redmine interface is very visual. Tasks can be colored, and a loading bar fills to indicate the progress of the different tasks. Finally, they can have a status (“New”, “In progress”, “Completed” …).

Redmine works with various tabs, arranged on the application’s top bar, among which :

Contains an overall description of the project, and his different stakeholders.

A newsfeed allowing quick follow-up of tasks and projects, specific to each user.

Allows you to easily follow all the requests (“in progress”, “closed” …), using powerful filters.

Allows you to build a database of all filetypes, uploable from a PC.

A zone allowing to add all types of words. Allows you to write internal useful documentation, for example.

Visually represents the progress of the different actions constituting a project, using different time units.

They allow users of a project to communicate with each other. Each project has a list of possible forums.

News are about any project. They contain a title, a summary and a detailed description.

Different use cases

It is possible to manage many types of projects with Redmine, while involving customers. Redmine gives them the possibility to be alerted of the progress of their project, to add comments directly or to add desired tasks and modifications.
